Hello all! Hope you’ll still remember me….I am aware that I have been on hiatus for sooo long….one year to be exact! Wow, time flies when you are busy! That’s another story for another time, in this post I would love to share with you my experience of permanent laser hair removal as it is probably one of the best things I have ever done in my life (beauty-wise!), so let’s get straight into it!!
I decided to go with Therapie Clinic as they are the leading laser hair removal specialist in Ireland. They were also running a promotion, €49 for any bikini treatment.
A little bit of background on laser hair removal and why I decided to do it!
How does laser hair removal work?(extracted from Therapie Clinic’s website)
Lasers emit energy in the form of light; it targets and heats up the hair follicle. Laser light is attracted to and absorbed by melanin, the pigment in the hair.
The heat travels down the hair and destroys the root and interconnectors connecting it to the blood supply; preventing the growth of more hair.
Laser hair removal only affects the specific structures of the hair and follicle, leaving the surrounding tissue undamaged
Why did I choose permanent hair removal and which area did I choose?
Why? Pretty simple…who loves shaving or waxing on a regular basis?? Personally, I would love to be hair-free neck down…but I am not, like many other girls. I am not an extremely hairy person, just the usual peach fuzz on my face and I can get away with not shaving my legs for a week. Unfortunately, the hair which grows on my underarm and bikini areas is thick and coarse.
Which area? Hair growing on bikini area bothers me more than hair growing on my underarm so I decided to go for Hollywood bikini laser treatment (yes, all will be gone!). I tried home waxing when I was in my late teens and back then I used Veet waxing strips. The pain was unbearable at the start and it took me nearly TWO hours to wax the whole bikini area… Wow, it sounds like I’m a hairy beast!! Back then, I didn’t know the techniques of waxing so I had to take my time! Waxing simply took too long and the pain was excruciating…so I decided to shave. I am not a big fan of this method of bikini hair removal as the hair literally grew back within one day and I hated feeling stubble down there. Not to mention the ingrown hair… So when I saw Therapie clinic’s offer on Facebook, I decided to take the plunge and finally book my appointment! Here are all the bikini area options you can choose from;
Before you can start your session, you will need to book a consultation and a patch test first. Please note that laser hair removal might not be suitable for you if you have light hair plus light skin. Hair must contain some level of brown pigment (melanin) to respond to laser. Blond, grey or red hair will not respond therefore cannot be treated.
My consultation – this process took approximately 20 minutes. The consultant explained how laser hair removal works, which machine they will use on me (as they have a few types) and the whole treatment process. I did some research and I also watched a few videos on YouTube already before I went in for my consultation but I had a few questions which I wanted to ask the consultant directly. My main concern was pain…I have a quite high tolerance for pain but I did not want to quit halfway, especially after paying for the whole session!! She explained that the pain would be quite tolerable, especially if the client is used to waxing.
Patch test – This took two minutes. A few zaps of the laser on a small patch of the desired area. I did not observe any changes or irritation on the skin so I was good to go!!
To be honest, I was fairly nervous before my laser session. As I mentioned before, I was most worried about the pain… Plus it is fairly awkward being exposed waist down in a very well lit room haha. First, the consultant drew lines on my bikini area which divided it into four sections. I was given a pair of safety goggles to wear during the whole procedure. She asked me if I was ready and I took a deep breath…here it goes…
First I heard deep sucking noises and beeping from the machine. The consultant worked swiftly and efficiently. The area just below my belly button was alright and it did feel like rubber bands slapped against my skin. As she proceeded, the more painful it got and my palms started to sweat. It was not so unbearable that I had to stop the session to take a break but I winced a few times and silently pray for it to end!! The whole procedure took less than 10 minutes and she applied some aloe vera gel as the last step of the treatment. My whole crotch felt like it was burning… I would recommend you to wear loose fitting clothes after the treatment because that area will need to be left alone for the night haha. The redness/discomfort should subside within a few hours.
During the consultation, I was recommended to purchase the aftercare pack which consists of a tube of aloe vera gel and also a tube of Murad exfoliator which came to a total of €49. Thinking back, I don’t think buying these products was necessary at all as I have only used the aloe vera gel once and you can use any exfoliator from your skincare routine. During laser hair removal, you are only allowed to shave as removing the hair by waxing/plucking would affect the process!
About a week after my treatment, something magical started to happen…the hair on my bikini area started to fall off!! There was no pain or discomfort associated with waxing/plucking. I am not going to include any pictures of myself in this post because that area is, errr…private! But I can include these pictures below for comparison purposes (before and after).
I would say, about 80%-90% of the hair already fell off and that was only after one treatment!! Amazing results!! Here is a picture taken from Therapie’s website and it is pretty accurate.
Although I was pretty dubious at the start, I am truly amazed and pleased with my results. I did not think that I would see the difference immediately, maybe after 3 or 4 sessions but certainly not after the first one! I haven’t shaved for a week and the area looks clean, no stubbles or ingrown hair. I am delighted!
If you are like me, sick of waxing and shaving any parts of your body, I would thoroughly recommend laser hair removal. Yes, it is a little bit painful and you do need to commit to finish your course (6-8 treatments) in order to see the end results, but the difference is just fantastic! I feel so liberated and freeeeee!!lol
I am already thinking of adding more areas next time I am getting my treatment. Therapie clinic is currently running pretty sweet deals on their website so I would totally recommend you all to check those out!
Anyways, I hope that this post has been informative to all of you who are considering to get laser hair removal done. I am not a professional by any means, so please consult with one if you have more technical/medical related questions. In regards of my experience, please feel free to ask me any questions in the comment section below and I will try my best to answer them🙂
Until next time,
